Audio books on CDs
CD recording technology lowered the production costs of the audio books because of their greater storage space.

The CDs containing audio books come in two formats. One is an audio book on regular CD, and the other an MP3 format. There is not much difference between the two except that the latter can store much more audio content than the former. The MP3 format compresses the audio file at a higher rate allowing a much larger amount of audio book content to be loaded onto a CD. This obviously economizes the costs in terms of the number of CDs needed for each audio book.

Advantages of CDs
A great advantage of audio books on a CD is that you can buy a great selection of audio books from the book stores. iPods and other portable media players have always been very popular for the purpose of playing music, but it is now beginning to become common for them to be used for listening to audio books also! Audio books on CDs are still quite a popular option for many audio book lovers world wide despite the advent and popularity of iPods

Download Sources
You can download audio books online in digital form and then burn to CDs, or there are numerous online and offline audio book rental clubs which provide CDs at a fraction of the cost of the book itself for a limited time, very much like a library. You can become a member of such a club on a monthly or annual basis. The audio books are mailed to you on a CD most commonly, or you can choose to download it to your computer. Note: The download file will expire after a set time.

There is little doubt CD audio books will still be around for a while yet, due to there low cost and flexibility!
